Choosing the Right Gear
At Kickers & Gliders we introduce kids to two types of Nordic Skiing, Classic and Skate Skiing. Each style uses specific motions to propel the skier forward and therefore uses different types of ski gear. One of the very first skills the kids must master is finding the right boots, skis, and poles to match the style of skiing being taught that day. The Soldier Hollow Nordic Center provides both styles of gear to the student.
Types of Skis
Classic skis have a different texture ( scales or skins) in center of each ski under the binding. The “scales” is an added plastic that resembles actual fish scales and the “skins” texture is like hairy fabric . When compressed the textured portion of the ski is designed to grab the snow.
Skate skis have a smooth texture the entire length of the ski.
Ski size is based on both height and weight. For the Kickers and Glider kids we keep it simple and have the child choose the length of skis based on their height. Differences in weight can be considered when they’ve mastered some of the basics of balance and stride. Minor adjustments can be made when the skier can confidently maneuver longer skis. As weight increases the length of the ski will also increase.

Boots- The Nordic Center provides two styles of boots for Kickers & Gliders. The classic boot for classic skiing and the combi boot. The combi boot can be used for skate skiing as well as classic. The boots are in European sizes. There are conversion charts hanging near the boot racks to help you convert from US sizing to EU sizing. Feel free to bring your child in before the start date to get boots fitted.
