Team Soldier Hollow is looking for ambitious high school cyclists (grades 9-12) who want to train and race at a high level locally and regionally who will contribute to our growing club and vision of “Developing Champions in Sport and Life.”
Program Goal:
The goal of the entire program is to provide a 5 month base, build, and taper to best prepare athletes for the NICA season later in the year. The first two months are heavily focused on strength training and Level 1/2 training. The following 2 months athletes maintain a higher load of strength while increasing on the bike training volume and intensity. The final couple of weeks will be a taper to peak for some races in May, primarily the 12 hours of Mesa Verde.
Team SOHO MTB and Ski Application:
This application is for those athletes who would like to participate in the Team SOHO cycling program. There are only 20 slots available this year and we will only take the 20 most committed applicants. This application should be filled out by the athlete and not the parents. Grammar, goals, level of commitment, and openness to learning will all be considered when reviewing applications. Applications will be accepted between November 5th and December 1st. We will then review applications and let those who are accepted into the program register.
The program will run from January 13th, 2025 through May 31st, 2025. Practices will occur mostly at Soldier Hollow on Monday (2-4), Wednesday (4-6), Thursday (4-6), and Saturday (9-12). Monday's and Thursday's will be strength training, Wednesday's will be XC skiing, and Saturday's will be long rides outside or on the trainer depending on weather. Once the weather gets nicer will move away from XC Skiing and do more riding. Athletes will also be expected to ride on their own time on the days we don't have practice.
Team SOHO has access to a world class training facility that includes a strength room and 20 Wahoo Kickr Trainers. This program also includes a season pass to Soldier Hollow. The program will be coached by a number of seasoned cycling coaches including; Scott Preston who is in charge of the training plan, Melanie Lake will head up the strength training, Liam Betts will be in charge of weekly communication and attend the majority of practices, Anna Cox will lead the XC ski days, and Gerrit Garberich will be the Team SOHO liaison and help as available.
We have 3 planned away trips/camps. The first will be from Feb 2/12-2/17 in California. The second will be from March 13-16 in St. George and coincide with the True Grit Mountain Bike race, and the final trip will be from May 7-11 in Cortez, CO concluding with the 12 hours of Mesa Verde Relay Race. We always try to raise money through sponsorships to help offset these costs but subsidization is never guaranteed. We will also ask athletes not to use phones on these trips to maximize team bonding, learning, and training.
The program will cost $1000 and include a Team SOHO cycling kit, Soldier Hollow season pass, coaching, trip support, ski equipment, strength room access, and trainer access.
